Question – How do you eat an elephant?

One of my recent projects is helping a homeowner get settled in her new home – a move-in design. And once again I am reminded how unsettling it can be to move your old stuff, to your new home. To find new spaces for favorite things to live; to discover cabinets in the new home aren’t as large as the old home and the dishes don’t fit. Or when placing the rug in the much larger living area, to find it now looks like a postage stamp on an extremely large envelope. It can feel overwhelming!

Answer – One bite at a time of course!

Focus on one room at a time, preferably one of the rooms you will be spending the most time in. Start small, even with a cupboard or closet. If you didn’t de-clutter before the move, do it now. You will never feel organized or settled knowing you must go back to the same space again, and again. ORGANIZE as you go – the container store is your friend. Your confidence will grow room by beautiful room!

Remember – be kind to yourself!

Enjoy the process and don’t be in too much of a hurry. Most of us don’t have the time or resources to completely redesign, or refurnish a new home. So we start with what we have – that chair that looked great in the living area now might be perfect in the bedroom. Or how about relocating that rug to the dining area? A well designed home takes hard work, patience and a little time to feel like home.
